Electric to Gas Conversions in Auckland

Electric to gas hot water conversion means assessing the whole installation, not assuming a change of fuel will save money. If you smell gas at an existing supply, do not operate switches or use flames; leave the building and call from outside. For a planned conversion, start with household demand, supply options and the practical limits of the property.

Electric to gas hot water conversion: compare the full picture

A conversion may suit some households, but it is not automatically cheaper to run or simpler to install. Compare expected hot water use, energy tariffs, supply charges and installation requirements. Include any changes to pipework, electrical connections or building finishes when considering the overall proposal.

Explain why you want to change: an ageing cylinder, insufficient hot water or a renovation can lead to different recommendations. Ask whether repairing or replacing the electric system is also worth considering. A useful assessment compares suitable options rather than treating gas as the default answer.

Confirming gas supply and appliance suitability

Establish whether reticulated gas is available or whether LPG would be needed. An existing gas connection does not prove it can support another appliance. The gasfitter needs to consider pipework capacity and other appliances drawing from the same supply, including any planned additions.

The proposed water heater must match the fuel type and household requirements. Discuss bathrooms, likely simultaneous use and existing water pressure. Gasfitting must be carried out by certified gasfitters, with the required certification paperwork provided for the work. Do not select equipment on advertised output alone.

Location, flue and access constraints

Assess the proposed heater location alongside flue or exhaust requirements, nearby openings and access for maintenance. A convenient wall position may not be suitable once those factors are considered. Indoor and outdoor installations have different requirements, so avoid assuming one arrangement can simply replace another.

For LPG, discuss suitable cylinder positioning and access for ongoing supply. For any installation, consider the water pipe routes and the distance to frequently used taps. Location affects the work required and the user experience; changing the heat source alone does not resolve every hot water concern.

For commercial premises, describe peak usage, equipment requirements and shutdown constraints separately from household assumptions. Confirm which connected appliances are suitable, including any proposed cooking changes, before extending the supply or finalising the work programme.

Planning the changeover and handover

Agree how the existing electric system will be disconnected and removed, and who will complete any electrical or building work. Clarify which items are included in the quote and how access will be arranged. Discuss interruption to hot water without assuming a particular changeover duration.

Before regular use, ask about operational checks, temperature settings and any outstanding work. Keep the required certification paperwork and appliance instructions. Understand maintenance needs and what to do if the system develops a fault, rather than relying on habits carried over from the old cylinder.

How Stately approaches the job

Explain current demand. Describe your existing system, bathrooms and hot water concerns. Include any planned changes in occupancy or appliance use that may affect the assessment.

Assess feasibility and alternatives. Review supply, appliances, flue requirements and location. Compare the full proposed installation with suitable electric options before choosing a fuel change.

Agree scope and handover. Confirm removal, related trades and installation responsibilities. Ask for operating guidance and the required certification paperwork once gasfitting work is complete.

Your questions, answered

Will switching to gas reduce my bills?

Not necessarily. Usage, tariffs, supply charges and system suitability all matter; compare likely costs rather than assuming savings.

Can I use my existing gas connection?

It needs assessment alongside other appliances. Existing pipework and supply capacity may not suit the additional demand.

Can the heater go where the cylinder was?

Not automatically. Appliance requirements, flue arrangements, clearances and service access must be assessed before confirming a location.
