Cesspit installation in Auckland: identify the drainage type

In a surface drainage discussion, a cesspit or catchpit collects runoff through a grate and provides a place for sediment to gather before water continues into stormwater drainage. It is not a substitute for wastewater drainage. Explain whether the inlet serves a driveway, yard or another outdoor surface.

A gully trap receives wastewater from fixtures such as kitchens, laundries and bathrooms, and its water seal helps prevent sewer gases coming back through the drainage system. It is not intended as a catchpit for rainwater. Tell the team about visible waste pipes and nearby fixtures without removing covers or reaching inside.

Locate the cause before choosing the work

Ponding beside a grate does not automatically mean a replacement pit is needed. Debris, the surrounding surface, the outgoing drain and the wider discharge route can all be relevant. Describe whether water gathers only during rain or appears when indoor fixtures are used.

For a gully trap, persistent smells, slow drainage or overflow deserve professional attention. Record which fixtures are affected and whether the symptoms occur together. Keep people away from wastewater and avoid using affected fixtures where practical; do not try to investigate by putting your hands into the opening.

Plan around homes and working premises

At a residential property, share plans for driveway resurfacing, landscaping or a renovated laundry or kitchen. Finished ground levels and the intended drainage use should be considered together. Include photographs showing the surrounding area rather than only a close view of the grate.

For commercial sites, identify pedestrian paths, delivery areas and vehicle movement near the proposed location. Explain who manages shared drainage and who can approve work. A surface water collection point and a wastewater gully should be discussed separately, even when both sit within the same service yard.

Consider access and underground conditions

Installation can involve excavation and connecting to existing drainage. Underground services must be considered before digging, and the receiving drain needs to suit the purpose. Provide available plans and point out known service routes, access constraints and nearby structures when describing the work.

Do not excavate around a pit, lift heavy covers or enter a chamber yourself. Photographs from a safe position and a description of when the problem occurs are useful preparation. If a cover is damaged or the surrounding ground is unsafe, keep others clear and explain that when calling.

How Stately approaches the job

Identify the source. Describe rainwater runoff or fixture wastewater, together with the location and visible symptoms.

Discuss the arrangement. Review the inlet or trap, receiving drain, underground services and surrounding surface levels.

Agree the work. Confirm the installation or repair scope, access and responsibilities for related surface work.

Your questions, answered

Are a catchpit and gully trap interchangeable?

No. A catchpit collects surface water; a gully trap serves wastewater and includes a water seal. They need appropriate separate drainage arrangements.

Does a smelly gully need replacement?

Not necessarily. The cause needs investigation before deciding whether the trap, connected drainage or another issue requires attention.

What photos help with an enquiry?

Show the grate or trap and its surroundings from a safe position. Include nearby surfaces and visible pipes without opening or entering anything.
